La fondazione di Roma (G. Quaroni)
Primary tabs
Created by the painter Giorgio Quaroni between September 1939 and January 1940, this is a mural of great symbolic value celebrating Roman nature.
The work, which was painted using a mixed medium technique (fresco re-touched with tempera), follows the celebratory leitmotif of Rome's mythical origins, a theme that is recurrent in the works foreseen for the Rome Universal Exhibition of 1942. Partially damaged during the Second World War (holes, cuts, scrapes), at the end of '45 the painting was covered by a plywood panel resting directly on the painted surfaces; in 1986, after removal of the panel, the work underwent careful restoration.
It was painted in the Meeting Room, now known as Sala Quaroni, one of the main entertainment areas in Palazzo Uffici which is still used for company meetings today, but also as a prestigious centre for important conventions.
